The Innovation Committee manages three distinct areas: the Innovation Competition, the Social Innovation Endeavor, and managing partnerships to promote innovation in WIB.
The Innovation Competition is an international pitch competition on October 14, 2017 for teams that seek funding and mentorship in kickstarting their high-potential start ups. To confront the gender imbalance in women in entrepreneurship, our competition endeavors to support women by requiring each team to have at least one female. This past year, the Innovation Competition hosted 100+ attendees, of which 90% were female, from 28 universities. As such, our mission is to equip women with mentorship, interest, and knowledge to navigate the field of entrepreneurship. During the IC, we have have programming that includes Keynotes speakers, Ted-Talks, and networking sessions. This past year, we were honored to have Whitney Wolfe, CEO of Bumble and co-founder of Tinder, andStephanie Kaplan, CEO of Her Campus, as keynote speakers.
The Social Innovation Endeavor tackles a local challenge through Human-Centered Design and the creation of self-sustaining solution. The mission of the program includes encouraging new strategies and concepts for social innovation, giving back to the Boston community, as well as equipping team member with the professional and technical skills to spearhead their own projects. This upcoming year, our topic will focus on environmental education to promote sustainable practices in local schools.
Finally, we aim to diversify the start-up culture and inspire the exploration of careers in innovation. This year, we are excited to spearhead an internship program, a start-up fair, and networking nights to empower women by providing them with the fundamental skills to navigate a field in entrepreneurship.
